Arizona Stater University PresidentMichael Crow, Northern Arizonwa University President John Haeger and Universitu of Arizona President Robert Shelton have come out in support of Brewer’s budget fearing proposals by the Republican-controlledc Legislature will contain draconian cuts to school “While the governor’s budget includes tens of millionsx of dollars of cuts for the three state universities – on top of the hundreds of million in cuts we have already taken – thosre cuts are substantially less than the total cuts in the proposee legislative budget, which includeas an additional $90 million in university auxiliar fund sweeps,” said Crow in a statement.
“Theses funds include payments students have madefor self-supporting servicesx such as the book residence halls and cafeterias.” Fiscal 2009 budgett measures have prompted layoffs, furloughs and programm cuts at the universities and officials expectg more cuts in the fiscal 2010 budgeft as the state faces a $3 billion to $4 billionb deficit. Crow said major cuts coulds mean closure of ASU West in northwest Phoeni x and its Polytechnic campusin Mesa. Brewer’sw budget would use federal stimulus money and the salesa tax increase to mitigate cuts in educatiobn andhealth care.
In addition to asking voter for thetax boost, she is proposing a ballot propositiob to allow the Legislature to adjust voter-mandatedx spending. NAU’s Haeger has writtej Brewer offering to help to promotethe budget. Brewerr took over for Janet Napolitano who resigned as governoe tobecome U.S. Homeland Security secretary. Anti-tax groups opposr Brewer’s proposed sales tax increase saying consumer spending isalreadyy strained.
